The Monday Minute with Dr. Williams

Monday Minute

October 6, 2025

The first full week of October is here, and the momentum across our College is unmistakable. Opportunities to connect, learn, and contribute are everywhere, strengthening access, belonging, and civic engagement. I encourage you to lean in and discover.

Government Shutdown Impact And Available Resources

With the federal government shutdown now in its sixth day, I am mindful that some in our community may face a multitude of challenges. While federal student aid—like Pell Grants and student loans—continues, new applications, adjustments, and work-study payments could be delayed if the shutdown persists. International students may also encounter visa delays, especially for students and employees whose families work for the federal government or rely on federal programs. College support services remain available to assist students to meet the full range of needs, from academic support to financial support to basic needs and mental health and wellness. A Mobile Marketnew window is scheduled at the Rockville Campus on Wednesday, and the county offers additional food and essential support. Let’s continue to show compassion and support one another during this uncertain time.

Volunteer Fair And Club Rush Build Community

Engagement is a cornerstone of success. Today’s Volunteer Fair at the Rockville Campus opens doors to dozens of ways you can make a difference—while also building skills that carry into careers. On Wednesday, the Takoma Park/Silver Spring Campus will host Club Rush, where students can explore clubs that nurture their passions and expand their networks. Both events remind us that being part of a community is about giving back and growing together.

Celebrate The Freedom To Read

This week’s Banned Books activitiesnew window affirm the College’s commitment to open and equitable access to ideas and diverse perspectives. At the Takoma Park/Silver Spring Campus, you can participate in talks with author Saundra Mitchell, join a Banned Book Reading and panel discussion, and even check out a banned book each day. With snacks, interactive activities, and the Library’s Book Banning and Censorship Guidenew window, these events invite students and employees alike to explore why free expression is essential to both education and democracy.
