Montgomery College Expands Digital Arts Offerings with New Animation Degree and Certificate

Montgomery College has launched two new academic credentials in animation—an associate of fine arts (A.F.A.) and an animation certificate—providing targeted pathways for students preparing to enter the rapidly growing digital media and creative technology industries.

The 60-credit A.F.A. balances intensive studio art instruction with general education coursework, dedicating a majority of the curriculum to foundational studio art, 2D and 3D animation fundamentals, character animation, motion capture and video editing. Designed primarily as a university transfer track, the degree provides smooth articulation into four-year bachelor of arts (B.A.) and bachelor of fine arts (B.F.A.) programs, including recommended transfer pathways to the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC).

Complementing the degree, the new animation certificate offers a streamlined, career-focused option for students seeking immediate skill development or entry-level employment. The certificate focuses on core 2D and 3D animation techniques, practical software fluency and hands-on experience with industry-standard tools and real-time motion capture systems. This targeted curriculum prepares graduates for technical roles in dynamic sectors such as media, gaming, web design, advertising, forensics and medical technology.

As an institutional member accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD), Montgomery College ensures both programs maintain rigorous national standards in visual arts education. Students in both tracks participate in structured peer review, solve complex visual problems and construct professional portfolios to showcase their work to prospective employers and university admissions committees.

"Animation today spans far beyond traditional entertainment, extending into interactive gaming, medical visualization, forensics and digital marketing," said Jeff Golden, animation program coordinator. "By offering both a transfer-focused associate of fine arts degree and an industry-tailored certificate, Montgomery College ensures that every student—whether pursuing a four-year degree or rapid workforce entry—gains the technical mastery and portfolio needed to succeed."

Students in both programs complete practical coursework using state-of-the-art facilities on the Rockville Campus, including dedicated Macintosh digital art labs with drawing tablets, specialized studio space and a Vicon real-time motion capture system.
